I have worked at the Liverpool Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy at 55 Rodney Street L1 9ER now for over seven years, and have gained much experience and insight into what it means to be an effective practitioner.
My original background was in management, commercial and production, where I first learned about counselling skills and the psychology of motivation and people management, and then following a path towards Counselling and Psychotherapy, I worked with people with learning disabilities and in mental health nursing. Afterwards I gained an intermediate certificate in Counselling and a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling in 2001, which included supervised practice at Halton Hospitals Counselling service, latterly studying on a Foundation Year, followed by four years training on an Msc course in Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy from 2003 at the Berne Institute, Nottingham.
Continuing professional and personal development throughout this time has included attending courses on working with couples, five day and weekend group training courses which focused on a relational approach to Transactional Analysis, the relational unconscious and working at relational depth. To assist this, I attend both regular group and individual supervision.
I also teach Transactional Analysis as a sessional tutor at a local counselling organisation at Intermediate and Diploma level.
Working very much from a relational viewpoint; I have a Person Centred background which means I work empathically, offering warmth, genuineness and positive regard to my clients, Transactional Analysis is also an integral part of my work, as it is a sound theoretical framework which gives a view to our historical development both socially and culturally. I believe in the power of the therapeutic relationship, and as it builds (and with what emerges) the opportunity for understanding, challenge and change grows.
Types of client seen: Individuals and couples both long and short term, although in my experience regular extended therapy is potentially more effective, with various ‘issues’ and I also facilitate a therapy group at LCCP. I am passionate and committed to my work and aim towards satisfactory outcomes for the clients I see.
I am a member of the Institute of Transactional Analysis and work to their code of ethics and good practice.
